Tinea Versicolor
Tinea Versicolor is a common fungal infection of the skin caused by yeast normally found on skin. This fungal infection can cause small patches of scaly, itchy skin usually on oilier areas of the upper body like the back, chest and neck. These spots are most often lighter but may be darker than the skin around them and can also be flat, round or oval in shape. They also may have different colors, such as white, pink, red, tan or brown. People with oilier skin, an impaired immune system, or people using certain medications are more likely to have Tinea Versicolor. A physician can diagnose Tinea Versicolor by scraping a small section of the infected area and looking under a microscope. This fungal infection can be easily treated with skin creams, or an over the counter dandruff shampoo. The treating physician may also prescribe an oral anti-fungal medication, depending on the severity of the infection. Although the infection may be treated, it is important to remember than the areas of discoloration may take longer to return to normal. |
